What
is a Bridesmaid and What Does She Do?
Many
things are said about bridesmaids, but what
exactly is a bridesmaid and what do they do?
A bridesmaid is a woman
chosen by the bride to be an integral part of
her wedding party. A bridesmaid, like a
groomsman, is also called an attendant because
she “attends,” or waits on, the brides. A
bridesmaid is a very close friend or sister of
the bride. A bridesmaid is chosen for her
friendship and support of the marriage.
A bridesmaid or maid of honor (the main
attendant) serves as an advisor, confidant, and
helper. A bride needs at least one reliable,
organized, and cheerful bridesmaid (who is also
preferably the maid of honor) who lives close
by. The many duties of a bridesmaid include
helping the bride shop for wedding attire and
accessories, planning the rehearsal diner, and
helping the bride dress on the day of the
wedding. She is expected to run errands and give
advice on decorations, music, and more; plan and
often host a bridal shower and maybe a
bachelorette party as well; and help the bride
stay calm and unruffled by providing moral
support at all times. She holds the wedding
bouquet during the ceremony. She keeps up to
date on everything and lets guests know where
the couple is registered, where to send gifts,
when they will return from their honeymoon, name
changes, and other important information. The
bride may also ask her bridesmaid to assist
elderly guests, organize vendors, help with
seating plans, maintain the guest list, and
more.
It is expensive to be a bridesmaid. Expenses
include apparel and travel, lodging, meals, and
transportation. A bridesmaid may be expected to
host a bridal shower and give a shower gift as
well as a wedding gift. She may have extra
beauty salon, accessory, or event-related
expenses as well.
To save money, a bridesmaid can ask others to
contribute to the shower, wear a dress she
already has if acceptable by the bride, sew her
own dress, and stay at the home of friends.
Also, if her budget allows it, a bride may pay
for some of the bridesmaid’s expenses.
A bachelorette party should be fun for everyone
to toast the bride and enjoy both old and new
friends. In planning the party, the bridesmaid
should keep the preferences of the bride in
mind. She should consider what type of
entertainment the bride would want, not what
she, the bridesmaid would necessarily like. A bachelorette party should be a
unique experience that’s a bonding time and
loads of fun.
